Fiction Writer's Guidelines

The Frugal Outdoorsman would like to introduce a forum for outdoor fiction. We are a digital publication with a select readership, and we are seeking works that will be a good match to our outdoor theme. As with any publication, we have guidelines we rigidly enforce. Interested writers, even beginners, are invited to send a query. Our digital guidelines are. . . .

First, The Frugal Outdoorsman pays zero dollars for fiction. You get a publication credit, and you retain copyrights. We retain the right to publish the story and accompanying art work, if any, only on this web site: www.castbullet.com. We want only short fiction. We want only digital submissions. (See below for digital guidelines.)

There is no limit on word count—but we want stories, not books. Consider 6,000 to 10,000 words as ideal and 20,000 words as approaching maximum.

Stories submitted for publication in The Frugal Outdoorsman must be based on the following themes:

  • Western
  • Frontier
  • Hunting
  • Fishing

By hunting we mean as in Ernest Hemingway's "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." By fishing we mean as in his The Old Man and the Sea. In other words, with hunting and fishing providing the setting around which the action revolves.

We accept only high quality writing. If we detect amateurish mistakes in the first paragraph of your manuscript, we will read no further.

Digital guidelines:

  • All stories must be submitted as either a .txt, a WordPerfect, or a Word file email attachment. If you don't know how to do that, ask somebody. Don't ask us.

  • Digital artwork must be sized about 300 x 400 pixels or about 3 inches x 4 inches in screen size and must be a maximum file size of about 40k. If you don't know how to do that, ask somebody. Don't ask us.

We will delete without reading any unsolicited email message containing an attachment. Send only a query message to query@castbullet.com and with the word query in the subject line. If we think your story proposal has merit, we'll direct you to a page containing further fiction writer's guidelines.
