The screw length value, i.e., "3/16", is the length of the threads.
The screw head diameters by micrometer measurement are:
- Fillister #6 = .200"; #8 = .235"
- Weaver oval #6 = .205" - .208"; #8 = .235"
If you use cheap rings the screws are metric. These won't work. Try a Chinese search engine.

Screw Checker/Shortening Jig @ $10.00 each

This little hardened metal bar is indispensible for checking screw threads and for shortening screws. It's .130" thick, .378" wide, and 3.745" long. It has three tapped holes in it—6-40, 6-48 and 8-40. To shorten a screw, install a screw in the proper hole and hacksaw off or file down the protruding end of the screw. When you remove the screw, the hardened hole threads chase the altered screw threads. This little jig is a must-have for a gun tinkerer.

Note: The thread size on pre-1981 Redfield ring screws is 5-44 x .355". Good luck finding one!
The 5-44 x 1" Fillister head slotted screws I sell below will work, but you'd have to shorten the
screw and turn down the head diameter. Redfield pre-1981 ring screw head diameter = ~.172".
My 5-44 x 1" Fillister head slotted screw head diameter = ~.194".
